Acoustic Energy Wifi Radio

The Acoustic Energy Wifi Radio is designed to sit in a niche within this growing market

By including a built-in speaker and access to thousands of radio stations without requiring a computer (including BBC Radio), this device moves away from the hifi component and towards the bedside radio

The components used inside are also used in a number of other, similar looking devices, but this has the added reputation of Acoustic Energy

Sound Quality 3.5star.gif The internal speaker sounds quite boomy/boxy, but it can be plugged into a hifi for improved quality
Although it has two speakers, they are close together so it sounds mono
Ease of Use 4star.gif Easy to use, but lacks a search feature, so difficult to navigate large libraries.
Compatibility 4star.gif Internet radio works straight out of the box, giving access to thousands of stations.
Can access songs on a computer via a simple network share.
Support for slimserver rumoured to be in development.
Looks 4star.gif A very clean and functional design.
Audio Formats 3star.gif MP3, WMA and possibly AAC
No lossless formats sadly.
Reliability 4star.gif Still a new product, but no reported problems so far.

Overall 3.5star.gif For a kitchen/bedroom this is an excellent product, but not suitable for a hifi.

Advantages

  • Compact unit
  • Easy to setup and use
  • Easy access to listen-again stations

Disadvantages

  • Speaker geared towards speech.
  • No search option or text keypad means large libraries and WEP keys are problematic.
  • 15,000 track limit.
  • Radio stations are added and stored by Reciva, could be an issue in the future.
