Netgear MP101 - £50

The Netgear MP101 is the cheapest media player available yet still boasts a built in screen and excellent build quality.

Frequent upgrades from Netgear increase the features and repair any potential problems.

Reliability can be a concern, especially over a wireless network, it works best over a wired network

Supplied software is also poor, using Twonkyvision is highly recommended

Sadly, this player has now been discontinued by Netgear in favour of a new model with video support, yet sadly no screen in the latest model.

Rating Notes
Price 5 stars Although now discontinued, can be picked up for roughly £50 second hand/refurbished
Sound Quality 3.5 stars Reasonable, but not earth shattering.
Ease of Use 5 stars Easy to navigate, excellent remote
Compatibility 3.5 stars Supplied software is terrible, but works with Twonkyvision, so works on NAS devices, any computer etc.
Looks 3.5 stars Looks like a cross between a computer and a hifi component, lots of wasted space inside.
Nicely put together, metal case
Audio Formats 1.5 stars MP3 and WMA only, also Internet Radio
Reliability 2.5 stars Hardware is excellent, but supplied software is poor and wireless is unreliable at best.
Networking Support 2.5 stars
  • 802.11b only
  • Ethernet Port
  • WEP 128-bit
  • No WAP
Overall 3.5 stars Very appealing price, a good entry model.
Best used wired though!
