Sonos

The Sonos is at the higher end of this market and as such is quite a lot more expensive than the other players

This price difference, however, is down mainly to the superb remote. This really is the selling point of the Sonos system. It looks superb, is extremely easy to use and will undoubtedly impress guests

Along with this remote, the Sonos can also play music from any NAS/computer, without needing any software, and it also creates its own wireless network, so no network required

Available in two versions, one with a built in Amplifier for use as a stand-alone unit and one without for plugging into a stereo, this will work in many different situations

Multiple units can be used together and can either be playing different music, or all synchronized together

Support for lossless audio formats adds to the excellent sound quality

The only drawback is that one unit has to be connected to the computer/NAS via a wired connection

  RatingNotes
Price 2.5star.gif Expensive, the alternative products are much cheaper, even once an amplifier is added
Sound Quality 4.5star.gif On-par with the class-leading Squeezebox, but currently you are restricted to the included amplifier so it loses 1/2 a star. New stand-alone unit (ZP80) solves this problem.
Ease of Use 4star.gif Easy to pick up and use, but it does lack a search function so loses 1 star.
Compatibility 5star.gif Can access any shares on a PC/NAS, no additonal software needed. Adding extra units is extremely easy
Looks 5star.gif The remote is superb, definitely the main selling point
Audio Formats 4.5star.gif MP3, WMA , AAC (including Apple Lossless), FLAC, AIFF, OGG, Audible Format 4 (.AA), and WAV file formats No support for WMA lossless, or purchased music.
Reliability 4star.gif Some reports of the controller locking up and it being unable to locate files here: link Seems to be in limited numbers though.
Networking Support 5star.gif Uses its own secure wireless system, no current network needed.
Overall 4.5star.gif Extremely easy to use and certainly something to impress others. The remote is spectacular, but it is also expensive.
